If you are an avid golfer who enjoys a round even when you are on vacation, you need not worry about finding a course in New York City, for the city is equipped with public golf courses and facilities in all its five boroughs. New York residents usually require a permit to play at the public golf courses that form a part of the city’s Park and Recreation system and visitors to the city also have to acquire a permit by paying additional charges to play at the city’s various courses and driving ranges. The Chelsea Piers Golf Club is part of the multi-sport recreation facility located at Chelsea Piers which is situated on the extreme west side of Manhattan, between 17th and 23rd Streets along the Hudson River. The Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment complex offers a variety of athletic activities like golf, skating, batting cages, bowling, gym and even a spa. The complex also hosts several event hosting spaces and is a popular spot for parties and other social events.
The golf club at Chelsea Piers is Manhattan's only year-round, outdoor golf driving range that offers golf enthusiasts a chance to perfect their game and also take lessons from golf professionals who are on hand at the club. This multi-tiered facility features an automatic ball tee-up system, 52 heated and weather protected hitting stalls on four levels, two full swing simulators, a 200 yard net enclosed artificial turf fairway , a 1,200 square foot putting green, an indoor putting studio and sand bunker and a Golf Academy. The Chelsea Golf Club is open to public though it also offers various membership programs as well.

The Randall’s Island Golf Center offers a driving range and miniature golf. This facility that extends over 25 acres overlooks the East River and uptown Manhattan. The Randall’s Island golf center forms a part of the Randall’s Island sports facility that offers sports camps, batting cages, miniature golf, golf lessons and even event spaces for hosting parties and corporate events.
The Randall’s Island golf center is equipped with 78 hitting stalls which are located on two levels, an 36- hole landscaped miniature golf course, a short game area with bunker, grass tees and a 320 yard grass landing area.

The Mosholu Golf Course opened in 1925 and this facility features 3,253 yards of golf. The Moshulu Golf Course facility includes a nine-hole course, a driving range, practice greens, chipping greens and a clubhouse with a classroom or meeting space. The Mosholu Golf course is accessible by the New York City subway via the no.4 train at the Woodlawn Road stop which is the last stop on this route.

The Pelham Bay and Split Rock Golf Courses offer New York City’s only 36-hole facility. Both these courses are enclosed within Pelham Bay Park which is the largest park in New York City. The Pelham Bay Park golf course which features a links-style layout was built in 1901. This course is suitable for both beginners and experienced golfers while its sibling, Split Rock Golf Course is a championship golf course which sports a more challenging John Van Kleek layout.

The Van Cortlandt Golf Course is located in the north Bronx area close to the Yonkers border. This golf course which affectionately referred to as ‘ Vanny’ by the locals is easily accessible by the no.1 subway line at the Van Cortlandt Park and 242nd street station and the no.4 train at Woodlawn road station. This Bronx golf course which opened in 1865 was developed by a group of wealthy men who hoped to make it a private course. The Van Cortlandt Golf course which boasts of the longest par fives in the city has hosted several celebrity golfers like Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Joe Lewis and the Three Stooges. This course which is housed in a park like setting has been upgraded in recent years and now hosts new greens, new tee boxes and improved bunkers.

This miniature golf facility consists of an 18-hole "Pitch & Putt" golf course and a modern mini-golf course which is adorned with waterfalls, bridges and streams. The Flushing Meadows Corona Park facility is the only golfing facility in New York City which offers golfing at night for both its golf courses are equipped with lighting for play at night. The Douglaston Golf Course is situated at the highest point in the borough of Queens and it offers a country club setting as it was once a country club, the North Hills country club before it became a public golf course in the 1960’s. The Douglaston Golf Course was redesigned and upgraded by noted architect Stephen Kay in 2004. This golf course is also accessible by the New York City subway via the F train to Jamaica at the 169th Street station.
