Things To Do In Reno
Reno is Nevada’s second most popular tourist destination. It is not able to avoid comparisons to Las Vegas because of its casino/resorts. However, there is more to this user-friendly alternative to Sin City than blackjack and lounge singers. Reno has an art scene and natural attractions, not to mention nearby skiing resorts and mountain biking trails. There is also a full calendar of special events. Reno is a low-key alternative to Las Vegas, but it has more to offer than most people expect. Here are the best things to do in the self-proclaimed “Biggest Little City in the World.”
Ski in winter, bike and hike in the summer: One of the main advantages of a Reno vacation is that it is possible to combine casino/resort delights with other activities. The ski areas of Lake Tahoe are only a short drive from Reno’s city limits. Within an hour, enthusiasts can be on the slopes at world class ski resorts like Squaw Valley and Northstar at Tahoe. During the summer, these same areas are perfect for hiking and mountain biking, while cruises are a popular pastime on the region’s namesake lake.
Washoe Lake State Park surrounds a lake that is popular amongst boaters and windsurfers. For those who don’t want to make the commute to the park, there are trails just outside the city, though the terrain is less mountainous. Peavine Mountain has a bike “loop” that is easily accessible and clear of snow early in the year.
Walk the Riverwalk: Reno’s cosmopolitan side is most evident in the Riverwalk area. Located alongside the Truckee River, this district offers a decent array of high-end-but-relaxed shopping and dining venues. This is also the best place in the city for non-casino nightlife. The real attraction of this neighborhood can be found in its performance spaces, art galleries and plazas. This is the side of Reno that really does show that it is a little city with culture that goes beyond the tourist trade.
Try your luck at the Casinos: There are plenty of gambling and entertainment options in Reno. Most visitors, even those who are in the city for other reasons, end up spending at least a little while at the slots or tables. The gaudy Eldorado is a popular choice. It is known for its world-class restaurants and entertainment as much as it is for its gaming options.
Most people are surprised to learn that Harrah’s casino, a name usually associated with Las Vegas, got its start in Reno. Its current Reno location has all the classiness and eating and entertainment options usually associated with the brand.
The Peppermill Casino is one of Reno’s most popular venues. It has a cousin on the Las Vegas Strip that is dwarfed by the competing casinos. This Peppermill, however, is a giant among Reno’s casinos. It has a large gambling area and plenty of restaurants and shows, including some of the city’s best eateries.
Visit the best casino/resort for kids: Reno’s Circus Circus Casino Resort is not the best venue for gambling. But it is the best place in town to take the kids. The hotel offers decent rates and regular promotions. The Midway features free shows throughout the week and a glut of kid-centered games. Think of it as a souped-up version of Chuck E Cheese mixed with the best interactive activities of a Children’s Museum (minus any educational value).
See some special events: Two of the biggest events on Reno’s calendar are the Reno Rodeo and the Nevada State Fair. The rodeo, held in late June, is a huge event attracting pro cowboy from around the world. The meet receives international media attention and stretches over a 10 day period with interactive events, concerts and performances in addition to the rodeo. The Nevada State Fair, in late August, has a western theme. It is one of the more convenient events of its type in the country. Parking is free. There is plenty of food, a Midway with carnival rides, and ongoing livestock and culture shows.
The tourism industry will always be focused around Reno’s casino resorts. However, there are so many other attractions, that it is possible to have a good time in Reno without setting foot inside its casinos.
