LAN Airlines

LAN began in Chile. It’s name was first said to be an acronym for Línea Aérea Nacional. Since LAN now flies to destinations throughout Latin America and also has subsidiaries in Peru, Ecuador and Argentina, the acronym is now said to mean Latin Area Network. Its reach makes it the most visible carrier in Latin America. It flies regularly to the US, Europe and Oceania, as well as around Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Its wide reach makes it a viable choice for anyone flying to South America (especially to Chile, Peru or Argentina). Fares are generally competitive. LAN recently announced plans to merge with TAM, Brazil’s largest carrier. Both carriers will be controlled by the same group but will operate under their own brands before merging totally under one brand at some point in the future. LAN will also launch another major subsidiary, LAN Columbia, in 2011.

The airline is known for having good premium class services, including lay-flat seats. However, its economy offerings are respectable on long haul flights as well. The airline has seat-back video screens and a wide selection of movies and music. Games are also available.

After its merger with TAM, LAN will be the most influential airline in South America.
