Pet Friendly Hotels in Portland

Portland, OR is one of the most pet-friendly cities in America, proudly holding this distinction alongside its reputation for excellent microbrews. If you are traveling with your pet, there are several high-end options for you and the furball to enjoy your stay in the lap of luxury. And we all know how dogs feel about sitting in laps.

The Benson Hotel boasts affordable luxury – it’s not cheap, exactly, but you will feel pampered, and so will your pooch. The standard-issue illustration of a relaxing, indulgent morning involves sitting back, reading the newspaper, having a coffee, with your loyal pet lying at your feet. The Benson provides each ingredient to that tableau (except the pet), and even provides food and water dishes and a bed for the pooch as well. The standard rules apply: Pet to be crated or absent from the room when Housekeeping visits, no unattended pets at any time, and use a leash to walk around. The additional fee for the pet is quite reasonable: $25 per stay, regardless of how long.

At the Hotel Monaco Portland, your pooch is offered an indulgent package of special treats. In addition to the food dishes and doggie bed, the Portland Unleashed Pet Package includes the “Dog Lover’s Companion to the Northwest,” a makeover for Fido at a local doggy salon, a transfer on the light rail, a map of a local park for hiking and frolicking. A map of pet-friendly restaurants and breweries, some doggie beer, a complementary leash, and a trail mix kit, suitable for you and your quadrupedal mate. The Hotel Monaco also offers the services of a Pet Psychic (!) and no cleaning deposit or additional fees, regardless of the size of your pet or how many you bring along. And like other properties in the Kimpton line of hotels, they will even provide a pet if you miss yours. Though they do only offer a goldfish, so be careful about the cuddling.

The Mark Spencer Hotel is another example of moderately-priced luxury in Portland. Their pet fee is only $10, but it is charged per day, so keep an eye out for another pet-friendly option which charges a flat rate or no fee at all if you’re looking at a long sit and stay. The Mark Spencer also provides furniture covers to resist pet fur from soiling the classy digs, and are very understanding about accidents as long as you inform the front desk promptly.

Treading a careful line between pet-friendly and luxurious for all guests, including those without furry friends, the Heathman Hotel makes a commitment to harmonious co-existence among its guests. This will come as delightful news to any traveler who has had to deal with loud neighbors or housekeeping barging in all crazy hours of the morning, despite a Do Not Disturb sign. Their pet fee ($35 per pet per night) is designed to be restrictive to the hio polloi, but the staff doesn't view you as an enemy to their treasured harmony. Instead, they view everyone in your party (including those inclined to lick a hand instead of shake one) as a guest to be catered to.

The Jupiter Hotel is another option that marries luxury and pet-friendliness. Their fee ($30/day) is pretty high, but they cap it at $90, regardless of whether you stay longer than three days, and the housekeeping staff is extremely accomodating. Sure, they won't enter a room with an unattended and uncrated animal (that's a safety concern), but they are more than willing to schedule their service call with you in advance, to assure that all bi-and quadru-pedal critters involved are safe, happy, and well-rested. If pooch is accustomed to a walk at a particular time, just line up housekeeping for his walkies, and everyone's happy.

If your trip keeps you in Portland a little bit longer than just a few days, you and Lassie are welcome at the Candlewood Suites. Every room has a kitchen and dining area (limiting your need to occupy Rin Tin Tin while you venture out for some food), and their pet fee, though high for short stays ($50 flat for 1-6 nights), gets progressively more affordable the longer you stay ($100 flat for 7 nights or longer). There are restrictions based on weight and breed (of your dog, not you), but a welcoming hotel and a little apartment for you and Snoopy is worth it.

If you have multiple pets joining you, make sure to contact the manager at Homestead Portland-tigard well before your arrival. Their pet policy allows multiple pets, at the manager's discretion. The pet fee is $25 per night, but maxes out at $150. The quality of service that fee buys is exceptional, though. No need to worry about your Scooby-Doo catching fleas or other little beasties from previous canine guests. After a pet checks out, the room is completely cleaned, including furniture and carpets, and then professionally fumigated. Since this hotel also offers full suites, housekeeping is only scheduled once a week (towel exchange is available more frequently), so Snoopy doesn't have to worry about getting spooked by strangers too often.

Hotels for the more budget-minded are also available in Portland. The La Quinta chain of hotels allows two dogs with no size or breed restrictions and no additional fee for them to stay. The same is true of the Westin Portland. A Pocket House has a small fee ($10 per dog per night), but also has no breed or size restrictions, so if you have one of those dogs often mistaken for a horse, that might be the place for you.
